Carolyn Scott Panzica

is an artist who works with sugar.  After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, she opened Butterwood Desserts, a gourmet bakery located in West Falls and Williamsville NY.  There, she was able to bridge her formal artistic training with cake design and sugar art.  In 2006, after selling Butterwood, she opened The Chocolate Bar - specializing in unique food, dessert and drink offerings.  After franchising The Chocolate Bar, she began to explore the possibilities of combining her proficiency in sugar with the world of fine art.  Her first  exhibit was at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo NY in 2011.  It was this exhibit which enabled her to take stringwork- a very old technique- beyond it's traditional form. The show focused on the architectural and sculptural aspects of sugar and showcased the intensity of detail and refinement in her work.  The excessive embellishments of her creations draw the viewer in, focusing the eye on the precision of each element.  Her art becomes an exploration of how the essential details of an object inform, create tension and ultimately balance with the whole to create something beautiful.
